Passion Vs Purpose

A lot of us most times try to figure out our life’s purpose on Earth, our purpose in a person’s life, the reason for taking certain career paths, our reason for doing this or that and sometimes, we figure it out, but other times, we don’t. Yeah, we have those friends and siblings who all seem to have figured out their life’s purpose except us, but when we ask how we can do same, we’re told that in order to know what our purpose is on Earth, we need to find our passion. Now, let me redirect this to you in a bit…

Passion as we all know is something you’re excited about and can do all over and again regardless of the shortcomings. Sometimes, you’re told that you’re passionate about something when you’re woken up in the middle of the night to do it and you deliver perfectly. You see all the emotional aspect of passion. We’re passionate about afrobeat, he’s passionate about painting, she’s a passionate health advocate, you’re so passionate about coding…and we see the excitement part of it. Let’s dig deeper…

Have you ever suffered for something you’re passionate about? Like, you’re passionate about baking and you have to starve yourself of sleep, food and all the other things you love in order to deliver a perfectly crafted cake? Or you’re so passionate about acting that you choose to lose weight, add some, cut your hair, stay up all night reshooting scenes, traveling to locations and being away from your daughter’s birthday because you want to be sure the film comes out great? Or you’re a passionate gym rat that you work out 24/7 to get your abs right, your muscles in place and a banging body? Well, I’m passionate about cooking and yes, I’ll be in the kitchen till 2am getting the meal right and tasting some in the process… don’t blame me, we’re passionate about different things… I’m just not as passionate as you when it comes to body goals, buh I work out a lot too. So, now that we’ve looked at the suffering part of passion, let’s get the gold…

Passion isn’t complete without suffering. Yes, you read that right. You can’t be passionate about something if you’re not willing to suffer for it, but now, it’s more about what you’re willing to suffer for. Will it bring you glory in the long run? Is it worth the sleepless nights and stress? Is it worth the compromise or you sacrificing your finances or going item shopping in the rain? What will you gain from it? Is your job stressing you out? The next question is…is it worth the stress? If no, then, that’s a toxic job and you know where the exit is. If you’re suffering in a relationship and you know there’s nothing to gain from it, then, that’s when you hit the delete button. You should be able to separate passion from toxicity. You’re either suffering to get you to the rooftop or you’re suffering to get you in a rehab or in a ditch. Choose your suffering wisely.

You’ve read this far because you wanna know the end game right? Your purpose is rooted in the thing you’re so passionate about, but ready to suffer for it. It just might be that you’re a foodie and you don’t mind traveling the world and suffering through the hassles to make sure you taste that next meal cause it’s worth it. So, what are you willing to suffer for? Is it worth it or not? What are you passionate about? And finally, what is your purpose?
